Healthy Snacking  This Summer: What to Try at Campus Dining Locations

As the Syracuse campus relaxes into the quieter summer season, Campus Dining reminds students, faculty and staff remaining on campus that some of their locations remain open throughout the summer months. We asked Campus Dining’s Assistant Director for Nutrition Management Ashley Leone, MA, RD, CDN, CNSC, for her advice to help campus community members locate fresh, customizable options for breakfast, lunch or a quick snack during their day.

Cafes:

  • Most campus cafés offer hot breakfast sandwiches and cold deli sandwiches or wraps. Leone recommends always adding on vegetables and selecting whole-wheat wrap or bread options. For a healthy snack, grab a piece of fruit, a side salad, a hummus cup, a yogurt parfait or a Chobani yogurt cup on the side.
  • The West Campus Starbucks offers the full range of Starbucks menu options, along with pressed juice and some high-protein options—bars or a protein box.

View Café hours and sample menus for further information. All campus cafes accept ’CUSE Cash, Meal Plan Dining Dollars and credit/debit cards.

Schine Dining:

  • Schine Dining offers two locations with highly customizable meal options: Halal Shack and CoreLife Eatery. At each counter, you can build a bowl with your choice of base. At CoreLife, Leone recommends choosing from one of the taco options as a main option. When selecting a side, she recommends their gluten-free mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts or soups. At Halal Shack, Leone recommends piling veggies on top of any order. When selecting a side, she opts for the pita and hummus or a side of rice.
  • In the grab n’ go section at Schine, there are plenty of options for healthy snacking. Fruit, cheese, nuts, jerky, yogurt parfaits or meat and cheese rolls all make excellent choices.

Hours vary by location and sample menus are available online.  All Schine locations accept ’CUSE Cash, Meal Plan Dining Dollars and credit/debit cards.

Drumlins Country Club

  • Bistro 1926: Drumlins Country Club’s restaurant offers a wide range of options, and smart swaps are available for health-conscious diners. Cauliflower crust is an option for their flatbreads. Side choices include tomato cucumber salad and a vegetable of the day. Reservations are recommended! Check the bistro’s hours of operation before you go!

Reminder: Use Your ’CUSE Cash

Establishing a ’CUSE Cash account is an easy and convenient way to pay at almost every point of sale on campus. ’CUSE Cash is a declining balance cash account that provides access to food, goods and services on campus. A ’CUSE Cash account can be established by any member of the University community, including faculty and staff. The funds are loaded via the GET app or website and are used via the SUID card.

As a bonus, using ’CUSE Cash at on-campus dining facilities provides a 10% discount on every purchase (not to be used in combination with existing discounts). Visit the participating locations webpage on the Housing, Meal Plan and I.D. Card Services website for the most up-to-date list of locations that accept ’CUSE Cash.
